42. design development

i wanted to use this design which i had done for project 2 but change it up so i redrew it and thought about how i could make it quite different from what it was before with all that tulle and cording

looking back at what i had done for project 3 there was a lot of hand sewing which was kind of a way to get around not using the sewing machines which can be a little tricky and frustrating when venturing it on alone without a lecturer around so this time i will try and use the machine more since it might take less time and time to try out different things since i have done so much hand stitching, i am not sure what else i could do.

i did use an embroidery hoop on this but the cotton drill has stretch so it gets all crumpled but i liked the effect of the zig zags. i did this on the home machine so the stitch width was standard then tried it again at school...

i tried to make the fabric tauter on the hoop but it didnt work out so well although the irregular ripples created within the stitches feels really nice to touch but the crumpled lines around the shape arent acceptable.

so i thought i would just use running stitches but it was kind of boring and flat so i thought the idea of the zig zags was good and returned to it, thought about the previous applique experiments(which werent liked) and decided to combine two things which werent necessarily going to work out and predictable.

(final)
i decided to do a double layered applique since the bondaweb was rather stiff so the excessive weight would kind of go with it. the first and second layer of applique was cut on different sides and grain of the cotton drill to give slight contrast, the zig zag was worked on top of it. The stiffness created helped the stitches to be really neat and was wrinkle free which i thought was brilliant and i wish i had done this earlier. there was a problem with the base fabric the piece was initially worked on which was a stretch fabric and it wasnt right with the stiff applique so i had it cut out and then restitched it back on another piece of fabric with the squres on it( ribstop cotton) which i loved . the contrast of something organic shaped with the smoothbumpy stitchesx different 2nd layered applique which wasn't zig-zaged and then mixedup with the rigid structure of the base fabric. the stiffness works and was what was lacking in my previous applique experiments that made me gave up on which i passed as being very much like a flag.
